SOUTH LANSING – HOLT ROTARY AL STINE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Under the leadership of Al Stine, former Assistant Superintendent of Holt Public Schools and former President of the South Lansing-Holt Rotary Club, our club began a program of offering scholarships to local high school seniors each spring. The money comes from our annual Celebrity Luncheon, usually held on the first week of March at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant on Edgewood Boulevard.
Rotary International, an organization of over 1,200,000 business and professional men and women worldwide, has focused millions of dollars and hours on promoting international peace and understanding through education of young people. The Rotary Foundation sponsors the scholarly activities of thousands of young men and women through student exchange programs, a World Hunger Scholarship Program, and short-term exchanges of teams of business and professional people visiting other countries to learn and teach.
Our club is small, about 30 members, however, determined to make a positive impact upon the continuing education of up to three high school seniors each year from area high schools. The South Lansing-Holt Rotary club has committed to award a $2,000 scholarship to up to three senior students at Holt High School. We invite you to submit an application for this scholarship program. Applications will be screened and some applicants will be selected for an interview. A small team of Rotarians (two or three) will talk with you about your views and goals. Selection will be based on a combination of:
Financial need, leadership potential, essay, academics, knowledge of Rotary, personal motivation and community service projects.
We think that your careful attention in completing your entire application will assist in getting to know you and in making the selection. If selected for an interview we will meet you at your school. Your school administration will help in coordinating the interview meeting date and time. More often than not the scholarship winners will be notified on the day of interview.
Scholarship winners are expected to attend our annual Scholarship Luncheon at Buddies sometime in May. To apply for this scholarship, check the Local
scholarship packet which is released in late February.

Financial Aid (FAFSA)
A helpful Financial Aid Presentation from MSU Click here for more details!
We are pleased to announce the release of the 2009–2010 edition of Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid. This 52-page guide is a comprehensive resource on the federal student aid process for high school students, college students, parents, and nontraditional students. The publication includes an overview of the application process, steps for taking action during each phase, a glossary of financial aid terms, and other relevant resources. The PDF version of this publication can be downloaded at: www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/guide.
Q. How do I start the process?
Get a copy of the FASFA online at www.fasfa.ed.gov or by calling 800-433-3243. You should also request a free copy of "The Student Guide: Financial Aid from the US Department of Education.
Q. Is it really worth completing the FASFA? I assume the government will determine we have earned too much money to qualify for
any aid.
Yes. All families should apply for two reasons 1.) It is not that hard to complete the forms and 2.) you may be surprised and receive some welcome financial assistance. Many families mistakenly assume they won't qualify and don't apply.
Q. Is it necessary to reapply each year?
Yes most financial aid offices at colleges require an annual application since your financial situation can change. Your eligibility for financial aid may vary significantly depending upon the number of family members who are attending college. Additionally, students are required to meet standards of performance, including minimum credit hours and achieving a minimum GPA. After the first year, you will receive a renewal application which includes imprinted information from the previous year's FASFA application.
Q. Are students responsible for loans? Are parents required to cosign all loans? How much can a parent borrow What's the interest rate? Can a parent transfer the loan to the student?
Generally, students are responsible for their own loans. Leaders may require parents to cosign if there is insufficient credit history or if the student is underage. Parents can take out federal PLUS loans to support their children. Eligibility requirements for the PLUS loans include: a credit check on the parent borrower, being US citizens or eligible non-citizens (both parent and student) and being the student's biological or adoptive parent. The student also must be enrolled at least half-time in a school that participates in the Direct Loan Program. The annual limit on a PLUS loan is equal to the students cost of attendance minus any other financial aid the student receives. The interest rate is fixed at 7.9%. Interest is charged from the date of the first disbursement until the loan is paid in full. A Plus loan made to the parent cannot be transferred to the student.
Q. Is the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on the FASFA the most a family will need to pay at any college or university?
No, the EFC is calculated without considering home equity as part of the family's assets, but many colleges will request that information and factor it into their final Student Aid Report.
Q. If a sent receives a scholarship from outside the college or university, is it necessary to report that to the college financial aid
office?
Yes, you must report any outside scholarships or "portable" money a student has been awarded. Unfortunately, the aid package will be adjusted to reflect the scholarship. Fortunately, at many colleges, any additional scholarship monies are used to offset the self-help (loans) portion of the financial aid package.
Q. How is the financial aid process different for children with divorced parents?
Go to www.finaid.org, click on parents and type in "divorce" into the search box. You'll find information on obligations of noncustodial parents and stepparents as well as the education tax benefits for noncustodial parents.
Financial Aid Forms:There has been a change in the way the Federal Government distributes FAFSA Forms.Forms are no longer made available to the Counseling Center.Students can obtain forms by calling 1-800-433-3243.Students can request up to 3 copies of the paper applications.
